Psilocybin QTest® The First Psilocybin Test Kit for Psilocybin Potency

Have you ever wondered, "how strong are my magic mushrooms?" Psilocybin potency varies wildly — between strains, and even from mushroom to mushroom in the same batch.

That's why we created the Psilocybin QTest® — the world's first scientifically validated psilocybin test kit, designed to measure the exact psilocybin content of your mushrooms in about 30 minutes, from the comfort of your home.

Invented and written by Dr. Felix Blei, the scientist who first elucidated psilocybin biosynthesis. Reviewed by Dr. Marina Garcia Moreno, Chief Scientific Officer at miraculix

Quick Overview

Quick Overview: Psilocybin QTest®

What is the Psilocybin QTest? The Psilocybin QTest® is the world's first scientifically validated, quantitative test kit that measures the exact psilocybin content of dried mushrooms, truffles and mycelium — not just whether psilocybin is present, but how much.

How accurate is it? Validated against HPLC to within ±10%, following the ICH Q2(R1) pharmaceutical validation guideline — the same standard used to verify active ingredients in medicine.

How does it work? A 0.15 g dried sample is extracted, incubated with the detection solution, and the resulting color is compared to a reference chart (or read precisely with the QTest Photometer) — giving a result in mg/g or % potency in about 30 minutes.

Does potency really vary that much? Yes. Even mushrooms of the same species and batch can differ several-fold in psilocybin content — see our own lab data below.

Where can I buy it? Available as a single-use kit or in multi-packs via our EU and US shops, with an optional photometer for lab-grade precision.

Who's behind it? The Psilocybin QTest® was invented by Dr. Felix Blei — still an active researcher in the field, most recently as co-author of a 2026 ChemBioChem study on Psilocybe cubensis chemistry.

Easy-to-Read Results

The Psilocybin Test Kit offers quick visual feedback with color changes in the vials, allowing you to easily identify the psilocybin potency of your sample. Whether it's no psilocybin, a light concentration, or a high potency, the included reference chart ensures accurate measurement, from 0% to 2.4% psilocybin.

Immediate Feedback: Instantly determine if your sample has no psilocybin, low potency, or strong psilocybin concentration.

Clear Color Indicators: The vials show distinct color changes, ranging from clear to deep red, indicating varying psilocybin levels.

Precise Measurement: Use the reference chart for an accurate and reliable reading of psilocybin potency.

How the Psilocybin Test Kit Measures Mushroom Potency

The Psilocybin Test Kit works via a colorimetric scale, where each color corresponds to a specific psilocybin potency level. This makes it easy to assess the potency of your mushroom sample without the need for complex equipment. Simply compare the sample’s color reaction to the reference chart, and you’ll get a clear visual estimate of the psilocybin concentration, from 0 % to 2.4 %.

New Cultivars

New and Trending Strain Names: Namaste, Chupacabara, Deep End & More

Beyond the classic strains above, grower communities and cultivation competitions continue to introduce new named cultivars — strains like Namaste, Creature, Tasmanian Cubensis, Inca Stargazer, Deep End, Chupacabara, and Red Boys regularly appear in grower forums and events such as the Psilocybin Cup.

As with most cultivated Psilocybe cubensis strains, potency claims for these newer names are largely self-reported by growers rather than independently verified through peer-reviewed analysis. The same principle from this article applies here too: a strain name alone — however striking — tells you very little about actual psilocybin content.

If you're growing or working with one of these newer cultivars, the only way to know its real potency is testing it yourself. See how the Psilocybin QTest works →

WHO IS BEHIND

Behind Miraculix: Dr. Felix Blei and the Development of the Psilocybin Potency Test Kit

Dr. Felix Blei, CEO and founder of miraculix, began his career researching psilocybin and other psychoactive fungi, earning his PhD in microbiology. His groundbreaking work on the biosynthesis of psilocybin in Psilocybe mushrooms laid the foundation for the Psilocybin Test Kit named Psilocybin QTest. As the first to fully elucidate the psilocybin biosynthetic pathway, Dr. Blei's discoveries paved the way for the development of quantitative psilocybin testing.

In 2020, Dr. Blei founded Miraculix to apply his research to practical solutions. The Psilocybin QTest was created as the first reliable test for psilocybin potency, empowering users to safely measure the strength of their mushrooms. With his extensive background in natural product biosynthesis, Dr. Blei’s work continues to contribute to harm reduction and safer psychedelic use worldwide.

Through miraculix, Dr. Blei bridges cutting-edge research with real-world applications, providing tools for both researchers and users to better understand psilocybin and its effects.

Got questions about the QTest® for magic mushroom potency? We’ve got answers.

If you are looking for a reliable mushroom test kit, this FAQ covers everything you need to know about the Psilocybin QTest®.
From how it works to what it detects (and doesn’t), find all essential details below.

The Psilocybin QTest is the first scientifically validated home-use psilocybin test kit designed to measure the psilocybin potency of magic mushrooms. It provides accurate, reliable data on the psilocybin and psilocin content in your mushrooms in just 30 minutes.

Absolutely! The PSILOCYBIN QTest is perfect for testing the potency of any psilocybin-containing mushrooms, including popular species like Psilocybe cubensis, truffles, and even mycelium. It requires only 0.15 g of dried material to perform the test.

No, the PSILOCYBIN QTest is specifically designed for use with dried fungal materials, such as mycelium, fruiting bodies, or truffles. Fresh mushrooms contain a high and fluctuating water content, which can interfere with accurate measurements in this psilocybin test.

Yes. The Psilocybin QTest can also be used with most solvent-free mushroom extracts.

Because extracts are usually more concentrated than dried mushroom material, using the standard 150 mg sample amount may produce a color that is too intense for the evaluation chart. To keep the result within the readable color range, use less material depending on how concentrated your extract is.

Before testing, make sure that the extract is well homogenized and as solvent-free as possible. Residual alcohol or other solvents may interfere with the extraction solution and affect the result.

As a general guideline:

  • For a 3× concentrated extract, use 50 mg (0.05 g) of material.
  • For a 10× concentrated extract, use 15 mg (0.015 g) of material.

After comparing the color with the evaluation chart, multiply the displayed result by the concentration factor of your extract.

For example, if a 3× extract gives a result of 12 mg/g on the color chart, the concentration in the original sample is 36 mg/g.

No, the PSILOCYBIN QTest is specifically designed to measure psilocybin and psilocin content in magic mushrooms and does not work with synthetic substances like 4-AcO-DMT.

The PSILOCYBIN QTest quantifies the total alkaloid content (psilocybin + psilocin) and gives the added values in the form of a total concentration of psilocybin.

The background for this is that only the very stable active ingredient psilocybin is naturally present in healthy fungal tissue. For example, if not properly dried and stored, degradation of the prodrug psilocybin to unstable psilocin, the actual pharmacological active ingredient, occurs. Even if this occurs, the PSILOCYBIN QTest will give you information about the total amount of both alkaloids. Both substances have different molecular weights and to avoid a complicated conversion we give the value in terms of the well-known alkaloid psilocybin.

The PSILOCYBIN-QTEST works well with, for example, rotated or evaporated ("dry") extracts, but also some solvents like ethanol work if the concentration of alkaloids is not too low. This means that if too many foreign solvents are added to our extraction, it will disturb our extraction system.

The best way would be to evaporate the ethanol or any other solvent from a defined amount, note the dry weight, and measure it with the test.

The PSILOCYBIN QTest has a shelf life of at least 18 months if stored properly. Keep the reagents in the refrigerator at (35 - 46 °F/ 2 - 8 °C) and out of direct sunlight. Over time, the extraction liquid may turn slightly yellow, that’s okay. It is still usable.

Yes we have a validation for our PSILOCYBIN-QTests. This is a voluntarily validated and standardized test procedure based on the pharmaceutical method validation guideline ICH Q2(R1), which we have extended to the QTests. This guideline describes the requirements of the analytical method for active ingredients that are subsequently to be used in human medicine and guarantees a safe dosage of these active ingredients, for example in pharmacies.

You can find the short report Validation here: Validation report

Not quite. Many products called "mushroom test kits" are designed to identify toxic wild mushrooms or confirm species, not measure potency. The Psilocybin QTest® is different — it's a quantitative mushroom test kit built specifically to measure how much psilocybin is actually in your sample, giving you an exact concentration rather than just a species identification.

Yes. The Psilocybin QTest® works on any dried psilocybin-containing mushroom, truffle, or mycelium — not just Psilocybe cubensis. As long as the material is dried and properly homogenized, the test kit accurately measures total psilocybin content regardless of species.

Yes and yes! We would like to offer access to our instructions at any time. That is why we offer the option of viewing the instructions digitally and using them for execution. We recommend ensuring that floating fungi are not sucked into the system and positioning the sterile filter below the floating fungus layer before applying vacuum. If the process fails initially, cleaning the filter very carefully and reapplying the syringe can help. The test can still function if fungal components are transferred, but this may complicate color evaluation. Link to the video.

No, the test is single-use. However, we offer multi-test packs if you need to test several batches or strains.

No, the Psilocybin QTest® is currently only available directly through our official EU and US webshops. Buying directly ensures you get an authentic, correctly stored kit and directly supports our ongoing research and harm reduction work — something a third-party marketplace listing can't guarantee.
